Residents to meet varsity over hostel plan BY ANDREW KING Ilam residents get their chance tonight to put their views directly to Canterbury University over plans to turn a rest home into student accommodation. Residents will discuss the issue with the university which wants to turn to the Bupa rest home in Kirkwood Ave into a student hostel. Locals and the university meet every three month to discuss issues in the area. Last Tuesday residents convinced the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board to make the resource consent for the hostel plan notifiable. Kirkwood Ave resident Graeme Bennetts visited a number of his neighbours to make sure they were aware of the university’s plan

and found that many didn’t have any idea it was happening. “Most people didn’t know it was happening because it is a nonnotifiable consent,” he said. Mr Bennetts said they just wanted to be in the loop about what is happening in their backyard. Another Kirkwood Ave resident Allanah James is concerned that the university believes that the impact of this accommodation will be “less than minor” and thinks they may have under-estimated the potential negative impacts. Mrs James presented the concerns of the Kirkwood residents at the community board meeting last Tuesday, after a considerable amount of work was done by Mr Bennetts to bring the university’s plan to the attention of those in the area. • Turn to page 8

ENTREPRENEUR: Abby Button holds up some of the dresses that One Second Dresses will rent as part of their new business.

Down to business with dresses A group of Middleton Grange School students have started a rental dress boutique as part of a young enterprise scheme. The group made up of three 16-year-olds Sumarie Eksteen, Abby Button and Madison Jones. One Second Dresses was developed when the girls realised

the amount of dresses they had collected and only worn once. They saw this as a business opportunity and decided to develop it into a rental dress boutique for all occasion dresses from formals, 21sts to graduations. • Turn to page 2

JOB WELL DONE: Winners of the New Zealand Global Enterprise Challenge present their business plan to the judges. From left: Rebecca Gidell, Jasim Janah, Emma Murdoch (out in front), Josh Sowter, Hannah Monigatti, Paige Taylor and Omer Hazer.

Villa student helps team win business challenge Villa Maria College student Emma Murdoch was part of a winning team in the New Zealand leg of the Global Enterprise Challenge. The competition, which is run by the Young Enterprise Trust and sponsored by Massey University, has just been completed at the university’s Auckland campus. Emma’s team won for their idea for a mobile exhibition space to teach young people about the uses of light in agriculture. This year’s Global Enterprise Challenge was to design an in-

novative exhibition to inform communities about the effects of light on people. The team’s exhibition included virtual reality rooms and a ‘vertical farm’, which showed how different coloured light sources could improve agricultural productivity in indoor farms. Emma said it felt “crazy” to take out the challenge after 12 hours of hard work on their idea and business plan. “I mean when they said ‘challenge’, they weren’t kidding,” she said. “But it was so worth it. I

just met these seven students less than 24 hours ago and to bond so quickly and take out the win is crazy!” Emma took responsibility for the team’s marketing strategy, but was quick to point out that it was a team effort with everyone pitching in as needed. As part of its support for the event, Massey presented all students taking part in the Global Enterprise Challenge with a $1000 scholarship towards study with the Massey Business School, and members of the winning team received a $2000 scholarship.

Down to business with dress boutique • From page 1 Anyone can donate their dresses and have them rented through the business and people can rent rather than buying a new dress for a special occasion. Abby, whose family includes five girls, was amazed at the dresses she found while looking around her house. “I found overall about 30 dresses that night but to this day mum is still pulling out dresses that have been hiding in weird places. I thought even though I might wear them again I’m sure plenty of other girls would.” The business’ Facebook page has generated a lot of interest and bookings and the customers who rent their dresses also get a cut of the profit. Fifteen per cent of profits will be donated to local charities to help women cover costs for clothing for special events such as job interviews and business occasions. “Even though the three of us are only 16-years-old, we can still make a successful business and we all hope to take this further than just a school business project.”

Decision over trees on hold BY ANDREW KING A decision on the fate of four trees and adding a median strip on Main South Rd in Hornby has been put on hold until more public consultation can be held on the matter. Western News reported last week that the decision to remove the trees to make way for a Uturn bay allowing easy access for the new Carl’s Jr. would be made at last week’s Riccarton-Wigram Community Board meeting. The plan included an extended median strip from Carmen Rd to Chappie Pl preventing motorists to turn right from Main South Rd into Brynley and Tower Sts. This would mean vehicles that want to turn right would have to use the new U-turn bay and come back up to the intersection and turn left into it. The community board has asked that the two changes go out for public consultation but were not thrilled with the plans in front of them. Board chairman Mike Mora wants community drop-in sessions where the public could view the proposed changes and give feedback to the city council and community board members. “We feel it is important that we be involved in those meetings,” Mr Mora said. “The problem is we have had a resource consent go through without public consultation,” Mr Mora said referring to the consent

HAPPY: Megan Woods and Jacinda Adern with Sam and Olivia from Kidsfirst Kindergarten in Hoon Hay at the booklet launch.

Kids get chance to voice opinions on playgrounds Children in the south-west of the city will get the chance have their say on their favourite playgrounds. Wigram MP Megan Woods has published a new booklet, Growing up in Wigram, which launched recently in Hoon Hay with the help of Labour’s spokeswoman for children Jacinda Ardern. The booklet is aimed at making sure neighbourhoods in the Wigram electorate are well set up for children. There is a form in the booklet for children to give feedback about their favourite playground in their area. Dr Woods will then collate the feedback and share it with community boards. “We don’t very often hear from children when we have formal consultations – this is one way to hear from them. “We can talk all we like about needing to get young people

involved in the political process. Well I think we need to start that early by making it clear to them that their opinions matter and that politicians are happy to hear what they think,” she said. The booklet is a directory of the Wigram area to bring together all the facilities and activities for young people. Dr Woods plans on the booklet being an ongoing project with the community and the public can give feedback on anything that has been missed so it can be included in the next one. “I see this as a project with the community. Together we can put together a much better book than I could do on my own,” she said. Copies of the booklet can be obtained from Dr Woods’ electorate office at Shop 8, McCarthy St Shops, Hoon Hay, or by phoning 338 6347.

School stalwart to end decades of service BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD Rana Foster has been a fixture at Somerfield School for nearly 30 years, and now she is moving on. Mrs Foster, who lives in Halswell, started at the school in 1985 and had various roles in administration and in the library, before becoming the receptionist about eight years ago. She will serve her last day on July 3 and is not sure of what is in store for her next. “I feel it’s really time just to leave this particular occupation,” she said.

She does not have any plans in mind for the future, but would initially be spending some time socialising and relaxing. “I love gardening and reading and catching up with people.” The most rewarding part of her job had been helping the teachers and seeing the children grow up, she said. “It’s been amazing just watching them grow.” Some of the parents that enrol their children to the school had attended it themselves, and Mrs Foster was there to see them grow up.

Names would sound familiar and some of their faces were recognisable, she said. Her own children went through while she had been working there and only two other staff members have been at the school for longer. “It’s been a remarkable experience,” she said. “I probably will pop back to say hello once in a while.” Acting principal Simon Thomas said she had done an amazing job for 30 years. She was always calm, astute and got on well with everybody, he said. “We’re very sad to see her go.”

Rangi Ruru’s world-class performing arts building has been opened by another world-renowned act – Dame Malvina Major. Dame Malvina cut the ribbon on Thursday for the opening ceremony. The building is part of Project Blue Sky, a multi-million dollar campus redevelopment which started at the school soon after the February 2011 earthquake. Director of theatre arts Robert Gilbert was delighted to have the new building to start teaching young minds the craft they wish to pursue. “It is not just a teaching space. It’s a place that has been created to inspire.” He praised the ideas that had been put into the design and how the school had planned ahead to build the best possible place for young minds to grow. “It is a world-class facility with the attention to detail, the acoustics everything, it’s second to none.”

Bid to raise funds for mobility device

WESTERN NEWS

Challenge yourself for a good cause Six-year-old Jayme Leary bravely faced each day of his battle with cancer which included many days of chemotherapy, hundreds of injections and countless other procedures. The Child Cancer Foundation is calling on Cantabrians to show their support by accepting its One Day Challenge in July and raising funds for brave children fighting cancer and their families. “Everyone can get involved – individuals, groups, workplaces, clubs or schools. It’s as easy as selecting a fundraising challenge and then choosing a day in July to acknowledge the challenges that children, like Jayme, face every day,” says Child Cancer Foundation Canterbury/ West Coast business development manager Tanya Cooke. “Three New Zealand children are diagnosed with cancer each week and at any one time the Foundation is supporting more than 500 families whose children are fighting this disease, so that’s a whole lot of courageous children.” This is the fourth year that the foundation has held its One Day Challenge in July. Mrs Cooke suggests people may like to take part in a group challenge with their workmates or friends, donate a percentage of profits from a service, gain sponsorship for giving up something for the day or hold a mufti-day at school. “There are so many ways that you can challenge yourself on one day this July,” she says. “In past years we’ve had people hold collection during a dress-up day at work or school, give up coffee or another treat and donate the proceeds or ask customers for a gold coin donation.” Jayme, of Bexley, was one of the Child

A teenager who spent months in Burwood Hospital’s spinal unit wants the freedom to enjoy the great outdoors again with his family and friends. Elliott Keys, 15, was left a tetraplegic after a mountain biking accident in July last year, in which he broke his neck. But he is determined not to let the fact he has no use of his arms or legs stop him from getting back on wheels and into the great outdoors. A fund has been set up to buy an off-road, four-wheel mobility device called MOJO with the $40,000 cost proving to be the major stumbling block. From Mt Maunganui, the Tokoroa Mountain Bike Club recently hosted a fundraiser for him, raising $5000 to add to the $15,000 already raised toward to buy the chair. Elliot’s family is really grateful to the staff at Burwood Hospital for their support and care during Elliott’s stay. “Burwood was amazing – great staff and a passionate team,” says Elliott’s father, Mike. But now they are all back home, the aim is to get him outside and into an off-road machine which would have to be fitted with head controls to enable him to once again roam the outdoors with family and friends. Cancer Foundation’s 2014 Ambassadors. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when he was 18-months-old. The diagnosis saw him spend more than three years in treatment, which finished in July 2013. Jayme’s Leukaemia treatment had a few bumps along the journey with infections ending in hospital stays, three portacath surgeries and a stint in isolation for a week with a severe case of chicken pox. The Child Cancer Foundation aims to reduce the impact of cancer by offering services that ensure children and their families are informed and well cared for at every stage of their cancer journey. The foundation connects with families upon diagnosis and continues to offer support in hospital, at home and in the community. “We support families for as long as they need us – helping in the most practical and tangible way that is best for them, as no two cancer families’ journeys are alike,” says Mrs Cooke. The foundation receives no direct funding from the government, so it relies on the generosity of New Zealanders to support its work. Go to www.childcancer.org.nz to register a One Day in July Challenge or to make an instant $3 donation to the Foundation text BEAD to 206. Church rubble removal gaining momentum BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD The Sydenham Heritage Church rubble saga has taken another turn – this time in the right direction. Church supporters are confident the clearing of the rubble on the corner of Brougham and Colombo Sts has gained momentum, with further asbestos testing planned for the site. A meeting was held recently with the Sydenham Heritage Trust, city council and Environment Canterbury staff to discuss the processes that need to be taken to remove the rubble. The main issue on the table was the uncertainty of whether asbestos is in the rubble, which would make it difficult and expensive to remove. In April last year, the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority contracted PDL Partners to undertake testing of the material on site, which found asbestos on the surface of the rubble. But asbestos tests conducted by the trust before Christmas showed no trace within the rubble. Last month the SpreydonHeathcote Community Board made a request to city council staff to provide advice on further asbestos testing of the rubble prompting the recent meeting. Trust chairwoman Dorothy

MOMENTUM: More testing will be carried out to determine whether asbestos is in the Sydenham Heritage Church rubble. Haywood said the meeting was a positive step forward and the group talked through the process of what needs to be done to remove it. She would not comment on the finer details until it was confirmed in writing. “We’re much further along than we have been for a long time,” she said. “We’ve got the principals agreed to, that’s a big start for us.” She said the group also dis-

cussed the possibility of retrieving some items from within the rubble such as the pulpit and the stone, to preserve its history. Ms Haywood said there would be further asbestos testing. “It has to be clear that we’re handling the rubble in a safe manner.” There is no time frame for when the process will be carried out, but the trust would dearly love the rubble to be removed, she said. Community patrol stops vehicle theft BY ANDREW KING

A community watch group prevented an attempted theft while on patrol during a fundraiser for earthquake victims of Nepal in Merivale. On June 12 St Margaret’s College alongside the Farmy Army held the “Nepal’s Fete Fill the Crate” to send items of need to Nepal after the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake. The fundraiser was an initiative of St Margaret’s students and staff who were in Nepal on a World Challenge expedition at the time of the earthquakes and raised more than $20,000. The watch group was asked to participate with the setup of the event and kept an eye on things by patrolling the surrounding area to make sure the cars owned by people at the event were safe. Christchurch Crimewatch Incorporated chairman John Burke said they had prevented a theft of a vehicle in the Merivale shopping centre car park and the description they gave to police later resulted in an arrest. “We saw him leaning in through a window of a car, so we tapped him on the shoulder and he just took off,” Mr Burke said. “We received an email thanking us and confirming that the man had been caught.”

NEW DIGS: Canterbury University wants to convert the Bupa rest home into student accommodation. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

BAKING SCONES: Hornby Pupils Trisha Tayong and Kiera Bradford prepare afternoon tea for their grandparents.

Hornby Primary pupils celebrate relationship with grandparents The special relationship children have with their grandparents was evident last week when Hornby Primary School pupils spent a day with them at school. During the term Hornby pupils have been learning about positive relationships in their Kiwi Can classes. The pupils decided they wanted to recognise a very important relationship in their lives by hosting their grandparents at their school. Grandparents were taken to see all sorts of important things the children have been working on, then they were taken into the hall

for some afternoon tea the pupils had made themselves as well as some entertainment. The hall was full with grandparents and the photo booth was kept busy as children lined up to have a picture with their grandparents. The school and pupils would like to thank the grandparents for coming and sharing the day with them. Kiwi Can is a primary school programme, aimed at children aged five to 12. It teaches values such as integrity and respect, and delivers fun-filled learning to schools all around the country.

Meeting over hostel plan • From page 1 The community board decided to ask the university and the city council to make the consent notifiable based on those concerns raised. The university is looking at two options for the accommodation. Option one would see postgraduate students in the new facilities and option two would have first year students occupy the hostel, residents believe option one would be better for the neighbourhood. There were three main areas of concern according to the residents: The suburban character, the noise and increase of cars in the street. “On Saturday nights the street

is normally quiet with a few people walking along it. If the hostel proceeds as currently proposed there may be groups of students walking to and from the popular local night spot, The Foundry, in Ilam Rd,” Mrs James said. The noise of first year students is also a big factor with the university claiming that when they congregate outside that they will talk “in a normal voice.” “Forty-five young, red blooded teenagers having a good time together are unlikely to consistently talk like that.” Mrs James asked on behalf of the residents that the community board ask the city council and university if the resource consent application could be

made notifiable to allow “the appropriate time for thorough examination and discussion of the proposal and the input of the local community affected.” A Canterbury University spokesman said that the university was open to the input of the community. “We invite all those with a shared boundary with the property to share their thoughts.” Canterbury University is predicting that it will need to expand its accommodation by around 1000 beds in the next eight to 10 years. The opportunity arose for the university and it filled a consent in May to turn the rest home into student accommodation.

BURN OUT: Police and Fire Services at the scene of an arson at an abandoned red zone house on Stanmore Rd last week. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

Arson back in red zone BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

The worst thing about the last week has been a resurgence in red zone and empty building fires. Most people know these arson attacks have plagued the city since the earthquakes. Recently we have seen a welcome reduction. I don’t know for sure whether this was because of better security, fewer targets or offenders moving away, growing up or, with a few, going to jail. While there haven’t been huge numbers this week, they have been of the type we have seen far too often. An empty garage, shed or house, with no power connected, deliberately lit, sometimes by night, sometimes by day. This is a bit frustrating. I recently talked about fireplace ash caus-

ing fire. Two more this week, in Waltham on Sunday night and in Upper Riccarton last Wednesday. You can save an awful lot of heartache by taking ash well away from the house. It’s really that simple. The association we have now with St Johns ambulance where we turn up to assist at life-threatening incidents has confused some people who cannot understand why a fire truck turns up, sometimes before the ambulance. Our troops are not paramedics. But they are strong fit first aiders who will generally have a defibrillator amongst their tools. They’ll do their utmost to save life just as their expert colleagues in St Johns will if they arrive second. Two animal rescues this week. The traditional cat up tree and for a change a dog trapped in a gate. Both rescued.

Charity gets award for helping warm homes BY ANDREW KING

Community Energy Action has been working with less fortunate Cantabrians for 21 years advising them how to heat and maintain a warm, dry home. Winning five awards and insulating more than 20,000 homes during this time has been rewarding but the work has really only just begun. One major success is the curtain drop bins spread out through the city allowing people to donate their unwanted curtains which are then fixed up and given to those in low-income housing. CEA chief executive Caroline Shone has spent two years with the company and gets a great deal of satisfaction with what the

charity does. “What we offer is objective advice. We are not trying to sell anything. “There is about 30,000 to 50,000 thousand homes in Canterbury with inadequate insulation and we want to change that. While it works mainly with those that have financial difficulties it has free advice available for anyone over the phone or by email. CEA wants to incorporate the rural sector as well as the city making good advice available to all those who seek it. “The rural sector is just as vulnerable to the cold and damp as the city so we want to make information available to those people as well.”

atural Eggshell Membrane (NEM) is a revolutionary new joint support ingredient that has been clinically researched to reduce pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis with noticeable benefits often in as little as 7-10 days. NEM extract is produced from North American sourced egg shells by a patented eco-friendly completely natural manufacturing process which does not use solvents and effectively separates the eggshell membrane from the eggshells. The isolated membrane is then partially hydrolysed using a proprietary process and then dry-blended to produce a 100% pure and natural extract. NEM contains many natural and highly absorbable nutrients including glycosaminoglycans such as chondroitin sulphate, sulphated glycoproteins such as glucosamine, hyaluronic acid and proteins like collagen that are essential for

healthy joints. It is the natural whole-food choice for joint health. NEM has been clinically proven to improve joint health and flexibility faster than any other joint health ingredient. In one study it was 5X more effective than glucosamine and chondroitin. It has no known side effects (unless you have an egg allergy) and no drug interactions are known. It not only benefits arthritic people, but is ideal for athletes, sportspeople and those who want to support their joint health. It is also safe for use with animals. The recommended adult dose as used in the clinical research is only one small 500mg capsule daily. Further information on this remarkable product is available from our Naturopathic Doctor & Medical Herbalist or one of our natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, Phone: 388-5757.

CoQ10 reduces all causes of mortality by 50 per cent

R

esearchers were amazed with the benefits of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well. In a recent multi-country double blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. It was found that patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. Also, patients on the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in death not only from cardiovascular events, but from all causes.

According to lead study author professor Mortensen, this study is the first in over a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality, and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems, but these drugs also reduce CoQ10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure. CoQ10 levels are known to decrease as we age. Keeping our levels up of this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer. For more info, call Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 388 5757. We are happy to help!

Lifestyle living at its best 386 Bradleys Road, Ohoka $965,000

5 bedrooms | 3 bathrooms | 3 toilets | 3 living rooms | 1 dining room | 1 office/study | 3-car garage | Listing #: PI55660

B

oasting a generous two-storey floorplan, the scene is immediately set by the palatial tiled entrance foyer, featuring a sweeping staircase and with room to accommodate a grand piano. A selection of cordial living spaces are on offer to suit all your everyday and entertaining needs. The separate farm-style designer kitchen is generously proportioned and will delight the home chef with its smooth granite worktops, central workstation or breakfast bar, double oven/range and an abundance of storage and bench space. An open plan living zone with doors to an al fresco dining area combines large lounge and dining areas (with log burner), and connects through to an impressively large double glazed garden room. A formal lounge with gas fire offers further options and there is also a home office, gym as well as extra bedroom available. There are five double bedrooms on offer – the master enjoys a private balcony with views to the mountains, walk-in wardrobe and en suite bathroom with a large tiled shower. The family bathroom features a raised bath and separate shower, and there is the convenient addition of a third bathroom with a tiled shower and vanity to ensure all your family’s and guests’ needs are accommodated. The 9095m2 grounds are glorious with a series of patios and seating areas close to the residence, vegetable garden, landscaped gardens and established natives, a fishpond and a replanted paddock. The Ohoka stream trickles alongside this tranquil oasis. Conveniently close to the amenities of

Ohoka (just a quick stroll around the corner), Rangiora and Kaiapoi (less than 15 minutes). The city is also a manageable 35 minutes’ commute, but a world away. If you are looking for an effortlessly luxurious and comfortable lifestyle opportunity, this stunning property must not be missed. My vendors’ new home is close to completion and this spectacular residence must be sold! Call me today for a private viewing appointment – contact Deb Harvey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 027 220 6565.
